Za:Za, the monobloc sofa designed in 2022 by Zaven for Zanotta, has been selected by the ADI Design Index 2023 and will compete in the 28th edition of the Compasso d'Oro, which will be held in 2024 on the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the award, which was created in 1954 from an idea by Gio Ponti thanks to the support of Rinascente.
ADI awarded the innovative and sustainable features of Za:Za, which introduces a new way of designing the sofa: the usual orthogonal ergonomic arrangement with a flat base is replaced by an innovative construction system inspired by the hammock principle that accommodates and suspends the upholstered elements. A tubular steel structure supports slackened straps in suspension to create a housing for the arm, back, and seat cushions that are fitted like a tailored suit over the metal skeleton. In terms of sustainability, Za:Za is the result of a process of breaking down and rationalizing the elements of the sofa to reduce its components to the essentials. It takes into account production and recycling cycles: it can be easily disassembled, adopts recycled and recyclable materials, eliminates the use of glues, and the different layers of padding are each inserted inside individual pockets in the recycled and recyclable polyester inner lining; polyurethane is minimized by focusing on new material, regenerated and regenerable polyester microspheres, which guarantees a great return and very enveloping and soft comfort.
Each year the ADI Permanent Design Observatory identifies the best products and services from all sectors of Italian design and publishes them in the ADI Design Index volume, which is a pre-selection for the Compasso d'Oro award, the most authoritative in the sector. The ADI Design Index 2023 exhibition opened on Nov 6 in Milan at the ADI Design Museum will remain open until Nov. 16; the next stop will be in Rome, at Spazio WeGil, where it will remain on display from Nov. 27 to Dec.2, 2023.
